Event: Meet With Local Artists In BC At Eastside Culture Crawl

Halloween has passed a while ago, but it is a bit too early to soak in Christmas spirit yet. But YAY us, now is the time we are welcomed to have a sneak peak at local artist studios in Vancouver, BC. Eastside Culture Crawl is a four-day visual arts, design and crafts festival receiving more than 25,000 visitors to 475+ artists in their studios across 78 buildings in the area bounded by Columbia Street, 1st Avenue, Victoria Drive and the waterfront in Vancouver, Canada. For those who didn't know about this event until now, we've always had this community friendly open studio event and this year, we are celebrating its twenty years! There will be a lot of walking involved, so be sure to keep dry and warm. :)

The purposes of the Eastside Culture Crawl Society are:

  1. To educate and increase the public’s appreciation of the visual arts through exhibitions, presentations and displays;
  2. To preserve and promote the development of, and excellence in, the visual arts in Canada by providing opportunities to enable artists to train and produce their work where such facilities are difficult to obtain or otherwise not available
  3. To advance education and increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of the arts by providing opportunities for workshops and seminars in the arts, as well as presentations to the community.

Artist: Rafael Ochoa's Ideally Rendered Reality Of The Past

Rafael Ochoa is Toronto-based artist who focuses on visual elements from images of old masterpieces that he finds on the internet then creates remix of imagery of classical and postmodern art. Surprisingly, Ochoa utilizes multiple digital-imaging software programs for each piece, using a complex rendering process (for example, Photoshop digital sketching - final image - Zbrush for sculpting & painting - C4D compositing & rendering - Photoshop painting & retouching).

To name a few things I love about Ochoa's works, there are his gentle lines, mix of vivid and bright colours with slightly muted colours, dramatic chiaroscuro that creates depth of field, and overall staging of the image... basically everything in the pictures! Be sure to check out his website and Angell Gallery Website for more images.

Artist: Yago Hortal's Vibrant Abstract Expressionist Paintings

Yago Hortal is a contemporary artist from Barcelona, Spain. His works are famous for its vivid and vibrant colour often with fluorescent colours, and thick expressive brushstrokes of different colours that can be visually interpreted as the artist's emotional state. Hortal both spontaneously and intentionally smears, marbles and splatters the painting material onto large scale canvases.

In some of the images, Hortal's works almost look like 3D rendering of computer generated images. Probably it is because of the flat background colour or the thick texture of the paint that creates shadow onto the surface. I'd say Hortal's original painting is perfectly imperfect, not that I see his works as "imperfect", but it is "perfect" the way it is freely moving.

Below are the works by Yago Hortal from 2015 to 2016. To see more works, please visit Yago Hortal's website.

“I look for a balance between chaos and order,

something like a combination

between a chess game and a boxing match.”

- Yago Hortal

If you're looking for a contemporary way to display your favorite fine art print without the distraction or additional cost of a frame, then plexi face mounting is a method to consider.
Facemount creates a permanent bond directly between the image and the back of the plexi. Reflection between the image and glazing is eliminated, causing light to reflect differently than it would in a traditionally framed image. Colours are more vibrant and the image appears sharper than ever before, standing out with a near 3D effect. The adhesive Facemount film contains UV stabilizers so the glue won't yellow and colours will remain vivid for years to come.

* Printing on RC Gloss paper
* Facemounting on 3mm plexi
* Mounting plexi on aluminum e-panel/Dibond
* Routered edges
* C-Bar hanging system

Artist: Atmospheric Coloured Pencil Drawings By Kyu-Tae Lee

Kyu-Tae Lee, aka Kokooma (it sounds like sweet potato in Korean), is a South Korean illustrator, and comic artist, and animator/film maker. I've been eyeing on his works for the past year via his instagram, and his style of drawing has evolved over time, from ball-point pen, pen and ink to colour pencils.

Enjoy Lee's colour pencil drawings below- Lots of very pretty images with dazzling pastel shades. His works make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Be sure to check out Lee's animation shorts on his Vimeo page as well. Links below.
