Beginner Artists: Our Top 5 Portfolio Website Recommendations!

If you are a beginner or hobby-ist artist looking to start testing the waters with your art, the first suggestion anyone will give you is to post everything onto a website. The only problem is, most websites these days are geared towards fledgling professionals - recent grads, freelancers, etc. These websites are generally geared towards the demographic that already has some established income or can anticipate having established income in art. However, for a young artist who hasn't made their first sale yet, how do you test the waters?

Look no further- we've done all the muddy digging for you. While we haven't fully tested out the sites yet ourselves (that will come at a later post), we've dabbled and and done our thorough research. All of the suggestions below are not only free, but also ad-free! Sweet! That's already better than the free plan at Wordpress. (Granted, you will have to add the website's name after yours, but that's a given - and still better than the free plan at Wordpress!)

1. Portfoliobox.net

At the top of our list, there is Portfoliobox. Lush, modern, dynamic, it's a heavy-hitter for free portfolios sites. Boasting a highly customizable dashboard of all sorts of goodies, Portfoiobox is the Squarespace for aspiring artists looking to take their first steps in posting an online portfolio. Even if you are a hobbyist artist, your website at least will look super professional, and you'll also have an opportunity to play around with more settings than can be found on other "pro" websites.

PROS: Free - 10 products, 30 images, 10 pages, aesthetically beautiful and professional, highly customizable. Excellent website to add on blogs, comment section, etc.

CONS: Watch out when selecting your choices - many are “locked” unless you upgrade. That being said, there are still quite a lot of selection for those that are available for free.

2. Crevado

Where Portfoliobox has all the bells and whistles, Crevado is the opposite. Don't let the bold simplicity take you off-guard though. Crevado's strength is that it is truly simple and straightforward, with an easy drag-and-drop interface. Although more limited in what you are able to do (less pages), it can have the functional look of the late 90s/early 2000s, and is also unapologetically authentic, easy for the artist to use, and (most importantly) clear for the viewer to understand. If you don't have time to play around with all of Portfoliobox's shiny toys, go Crevado.

PROS: Free -  5 galleries, 30 images, 2 pages, simple and straightforward, drag-and-drop interface.

CONS: Limited pages, very “functional”.

3. FolioDrop

Not interested in fiddling around too much but wanting something cleaner? FolioDrop is your best option. With a much larger allowance for photos and unlimited pages, your portfolio can be super varied. It has a lovely drag and drop interface as well. The only issue is - there is only 1 template you can choose from, which means your portfolio will look exactly like all the others on the free account.

PROS: Free -  80 images, 3 categories, unlimited pages, drag and drop interface, aesthetically beautiful and professional

CONS: 1 template only (“Classic”, black/white)

4. Carbonmade

Looking for something with a little more personality? Go Carbonmade. Super-cute and direct, it gets straight to the nitty-gritty. Compared to Portfoliobox, it's relatively customizable, with a nice selection of different templates for you to choose from.  If you use Tumblr, Carbonmade's dashboard will be a bit familiar...just without all the glitching and bugging. It already comes with an About Me and a Contact page built in, so you don't have to waste Pages making those sections from scratch. The Contact page even has a message box all built-in for you!

BONUS: Carbonmade also has a "network pool" wherein employers can reach out to you about your talent. The dashboard comes with a messaging service that will notify you when someone is interested in hiring you. Awesome!

PROS: Free (automatic “Meh” Plan) - 5 projects, 35 images, very simple, relatively customizable, very cute

CONS: Very cute, very hip. Targets a particular demographic. Dashboard may not be what you expect if you haven't used Tumblr before.

5. SlidingBoxes

With every device having screens of different sizes, having a site that is responsive is key. This is SlidingBoxes' biggest strength, although all the other portfolios are somewhat outfitted for mobile use. Like FolioBox, it is super clean and minimalist, but you are even more limited with your customization choices.

PROS: Free - 5 projects, 35 images, (3 pages?) super clean, polished and minimalist, responsive

CONS: very little customization choice

So those are our 5 top choices! Personally, if you're looking to get the most experience out of your beginner's portfolio, I would recommend Portfoliobox and Carbonmade. Both of these two sites have much more customization choices and have connections to an established community of artists and talent scouts. If you're looking to just start off with simply a gallery to show, I would go with Crevado, FolioBox or SlidingBoxes.

We hope this helped! Which website host do you all use? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned to our Top 5 Portfolio Website List - for Intermediate Artists!

Idea Corner #2 - Easy-to-Interchange Art Frame

Hello everyone! Here's another segment of our Idea Corner Series!

If you're anything like me, you probably have tons of motivational images saved on your computer, or perhaps sitting in a drawer. Whenever I see one in stores, I'm always itching to buy it, but the issue is - where to put it up? I'm running out of wall space, but I still want to be motivated. What to do?

Of course, I could always change a print in a frame. Except, I never like dealing with the fiddly parts on the back, or risk getting scratched by the glass in some frames, or the sharp corners of the tabs in store-bought versions. Then I got to thinking - if I could front-load them somehow, that would save so much time and hassle. It's okay if it didn't have plexi - after all, posters aren't archival quality, and wouldn't need preservation.  Then I could change my posters frequently!

So here is our newest addition to the Idea Corner Series - a corkboard fitted into a floater frame, using magnets! The open corkboard allows you to pin and change art at ease, and the magnets make it easy for you to detach and reattach to the frame - in literally, a snap.

The steps to make this are super easy. First, all you need is the following - some magnets from the dollar store, some double-sided sticky tape, and your floater frame (with hanging hardware), and a sheet of cork foamboard. I used GB24, the Gold-Leaf 3/4" deep Canvas Floater Frame.

The next step is to used the double-sided sticky tape, and glue all the magnets into the top corners. Use the same sticky tape to glue the complimentary magnets in the same corners on the back of the foam-board.

And that's it! Pin your artwork to the corkboard, and hover it over the frame. The magnets should sense their partner and the corkboard will snap in place. Now you can interchange your posters without even having to take the frame off the wall. Enjoy!

Looking to start your DIY interchangeable frame today? Head on over to our custom frame section and select a canvas floater. Remember to click that you'd like cork foamboard as well from the drop down-menu!

Did you try the idea? Let us know how it worked for you by leaving us a comment below. Thanks!

Marketing Yourself - Artist Youtube Star Katie Jobling

Hello everyone!

We know it's hard to make it as an artist, especially if you're still young and haven't broken into the world of fine-art gallery networking. While the internet has opened up more opportunities for us, it has also flooded the ability for everyone to start posting and promoting. That's why we're sharing a few tidbits from some of our favorite self-starter artists who are excellent at using social media to promote themselves - from Facebook to Instagram to Youtube.

For today's session, we're featuring an artist who uses Youtube as their main channel (pun not intended) to develop a loyal following, community and feedback. Please meet Katie Jobling, a graphic designer-turned-artist from across the seas. Katie is one of those rare and lucky individuals who were able to make the complete leap into doing art full-time, leaving behind their creative 9-5 job for full artistic freedom. In addition to doing tutorials and sharing her knowledge, she also ships and handles her own prints from an Etsy shop and Instagram site.

One of Katie's hugest contributions to her followers (we believe) is her calming and easy-to-follow tutorials. She is able to express her wealth of knowledge in a manner that is approachable, kind, and self-forgiving. When watching her videos, the most complicated steps can seem so simple, and the simplicity and softness in her teaching approach is inspiring. Watch her Youtube videos here:

She also does great video sessions on her own experiences with selling, pricing, and building her business from her art:

From her videos, it's easy to see how quick one can fall in love with her artistic "brand" as it were. She is soft-spoken and sweet, encouraging and peaceful. She's also relatable, as shown through her supporting vlogs. Although one watches the videos for Katie Jobling's art, soon one stays for the inspirational artist they may become.

That ends our first session of Marketing Yourself series! What did you think of the videos? Any Youtube stars you are a fan of and would like us to feature? If so, leave a message in the comments below!

Summer Art Events are Starting! - Riverdale Artwalk 2017, June 3rd and 4th

Hello all!

Sorry we've been away for a little while - May can be a super busy time for us. But now that it's June, we're looking forward enjoying to those hot summer days and bright sunshine. Even better if we can also do it while enjoying food like this.

Speaking of enjoying the outdoors, have you all heard of Riverdale's 19th Annual ArtWalk? Created by the Artist Network in Toronto, this weekend show connecting Canadian artists with collectors. This "pop-up" gallery has been juried and themed, and aims to provide a relaxed, comfortable setting for both artist and collector to mingle together.

Check out their website and Facebook group for glimpses of the artists involved! Here are just some snippets of the artists involved:

If you happen to go, let us know how it went! The Riverdale Artwalk opens tomorrow from 11am to 6 pm rain or shine. Head on down to Jimmie Simpson Park and Community Center to see more than 180 artists!
